چکیده

In this thesis we consider a three-dimensional packing problem arising in industry. The task is to pack a maximum number of rigid boxes with side length ratios of 4 : 2 : 1 into an irregularly shaped container. Motivated by the structure of manually constructed packings so far, we pursue a discrete approach. We discretize the shape of the container as well as the set of possible box placements. This discrete packing problem can be reduced to a maximum stable set problem. First we formulate the problem as an integer linear program, which admittedly can only be solved to optimality within reasonable runtime for very small instances. Therefore, we present several heuristics based, for example, on the linear programming relaxation or on local search. Other heuristics generate tight packings for the core of the container, thereby reducing the problem to a set of smaller subproblems. We compare all presented algorithms on real data sets. We achieve very good results for the majority of instances and for some instances we even surpass the manually constructed solutions.

A new metaheuristic genetic-based placement algorithm for 2D strip packing

Given a container of fixed width, infinite height and a set of rectangular block, the 2D-strip packing problem consists of orthogonally placing all the rectangles such that the height is minimized. The position is subject to confinement of no overlapping of blocks. The problem is a complex NP-hard combinatorial optimization, thus a heuristic based on genetic algorithm is proposed to solve it. I...

Fully Automatic Trunk Packing with Free Placements

We present a new algorithm to compute the volume of a trunk according to the SAE J1100 standard. Our new algorithm uses state-of-the-art methods from computational geometry and from combinatorial optimization. It finds better solutions than previous approaches for small trunks.

A Comparison of Optimization Methods for Multi-objective Constrained Bin Packing Problems

Despite the existence of e cient solution methods for bin packing problems, in practice these seldom occur in such a pure form but feature instead various considerations such as pairwise con icts or pro ts between items, or aiming for balanced loads amongst the bins. The Wedding Seating Problem is a combinatorial optimization problem incorporating elements of bin packing with con icts, bin pack...

A Combinatorial Benders' decomposition for the lock scheduling problem

This paper presents an exact algorithm for the Lock Scheduling Problem (LSP) based on a Combinatorial Benders decomposition. LSP consists of three strongly interconnected sub problems: scheduling the lockages, assigning ships to chambers, and positioning the ships inside the chambers. These three sub problems are interpreted resp. as a scheduling, an assignment, and a packing problem. By combin...

On Solving the Oriented Two-Dimensional Bin Packing Problem under Free Guillotine Cutting: Exploiting the Power of Probabilistic Solution Construction

Two-dimensional bin packing problems are highly relevant combinatorial optimization problems. They find a large number of applications, for example, in the context of transportation or warehousing, and for the cutting of different materials such as glass, wood or metal. In this work we deal with the oriented two-dimensional bin packing problem under free guillotine cutting. In this specific pro...
